Insomniac Games, developer of the hit Xbox One game Sunset Overdrive, as well as the upcoming Ratchet & Clank PS4 reboot, has announced their next big project – Song of the Deep. With a reveal trailer featuring a gorgeous art style and side-scrolling underwater submarine combat, the game is reminiscent of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, but with a deeper focus on narrative and exploration.
The game’s website describes it as “a metroidvania-style action-adventure game following a young girl’s quest into the unknown to find her missing father.” It tells the tale of Merryn, a young heroine who must brave the depths of the sea, discover secrets of old civilization, and battle her way past monsters and obstacles to reach her father.
Song of the Deep also signals a major new development in games publishing. The game will be published by GameStop, who have thus far been content to play the role of retailer. Their entry into the publishing space signals an experimental partnership between Insomniac and GameStop, whereby all creative control is held by the developer and most marketing and promotion is conducted by the publisher. According to an interview with IGN, Insomniac president Ted Price stated that they would be retaining ownership of the IP.
Song of the Deep will launch Summer 2016 on Xbox One, PC, and PS4. A specific launch date has not been announced yet.
